Thirty-Nine

The next day is my first day working at Lady Bridge, and I get into school at 8.15 after dropping Rowan off at Tanya’s house.

The school runs a paid breakfast club to help working parents who have to leave the house early and to ensure the children have a good, unrushed breakfast to start the day. But Tanya wouldn’t hear of me enrolling Rowan.

‘Drop him off at mine on the days you’re working. He can have breakfast with us and go in with us. Dex will love having him there.’

I jumped at the offer and Rowan was delighted too, although this morning he did grumble about having to be up and ready much earlier than usual. Isaac had already left the house at 6.30, which has become his accepted time for leaving, and this morning I actually felt relieved, because I didn’t want to face him after last night’s admission of drunken foolishness with Tanya.

When I get to school, Ben is buzzing. ‘Do you know, it’s the first morning for ages that I’ve come into work actually looking forward to the day ahead. Having your help is going to transform life in Elder class, I just know it.’

I smile, feeling slightly nervous as to whether I can live up Ben’s high ideal of me. But I’m really looking forward to the day too, and I try and focus on that instead.

Ben explains that the customary practice at Lady Bridge is for the teachers to stand at the classroom doors to welcome the children in each morning. ‘It also gives parents an opportunity to have a quick word if they’re concerned about anything,’ he adds.

It’s odd, having this dual viewpoint of the school as both parent and staff member. I think about all the times I’ve caught Miss Packton first thing in the morning, or at pickup later in the day, to voice my worries about Rowan’s problems settling in. Her reassurances always made me feel better, and I hope this will help me understand the parents of the children in Elder class, too.

The bell sounds. Ben opens the doors and the children start to filter in. I’m impressed that some of them have even remembered my name from yesterday. ‘Morning, Mrs Markham!’

‘Morning,’ I reply, asking their names and mentally pairing them with the relevant face. I’ve always been good at recognising faces, so I’m hoping I’ll know all of their names in no time at all.

‘I think someone’s trying to get your attention.’ Ben nods into the playground. The Buckingham mums are all waving madly, Tanya at the front, beaming proudly. Another movement catches my eye to the right as Rowan and Dexter head for their class. Rowan spots me and gives me a shy wave.

I wave back to my friends and blow Rowan a kiss.

‘I don’t believe it,’ Ben exclaims under his breath, making me stand to attention. ‘Charlie’s brought him into school.’

I follow Ben’s gaze and see Jasper walking towards the doors holding the hand of a diminutive young woman with the same colour hair as his.
